So what are the effects of the British Petroleum (BP) oil spill? Well a whole bloody lot! We’ve seen enough stories detailing the repercussions to the economy, the ocean, and even the Obama administration. Either way we all now agree that Tony Hayward sucks, so lets check out the other living beings BP is screwing over besides obnoxiously greedy persons of public interest.
And the Animals Getting Totally Screwed By The BP Oil Spill Are:
Bluefin Tuna
The Blue fin Tuna charactersized by its blueish fin & highly prized by culinary connoisseurs is already on the endangered species list. There has been a 20 year ban on it to help recuperate its dwindling numbers. A study published in May in the open-access journal PLoS One found that the waters along the continental slope off the Gulf Coast are a key spawning area for the fish. The recent oil spill in the area has killed off many of the fish in less than 3 weeks. These big fish take a no. of years to achieve adulthood & then spawn. Though none of the Blue fin Tina will likely venture into the infected water as they shall be disgusted with the smell but those already caught in the infected oil spill zone shall not be able to heal and are as good as dead. The delicate stage of tune life where eggs, larvae & the hatch that are caught in the Gulf of Mexico Oil Zone cannot be salvaged. Thus, a great no. of Blue fin Tune have already died before beginning life.
Oysters
Oysters are critical to the health of estuaries along the Gulf Coast. As filter feeders, they clean water and cycle nutrients throughout the food chain. The oysters have already depleted in nos. due to overfishing, disease and poor water quality, furthermore the oyster estuarine habitat has been dredged away due to the high demand of oysters in food world . The Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill has affeted the mere survival of the oysters they can not locomote and have to sit idly on the bed collecting polluted water & slick
Shrimp
Oil can kill crustaceans like shrimp, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, but it can also accumulate in their tissue and poison animals farther up the food chain. Theses crustaceans are scavengers of the ocean & there polluted food intake can raise the toxic levels of other animal that feed on them. Asa result of Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Louisiana’s commercial fishing waters have been closed. According to the Louisiana Shrimp Association fishing is a $2.5 billion-a-year industry in Louisiana & the fishermen are now scavenging for themselves.
Sea Turtles
Endangered species like Kemp’s Ridley turtles, loggerhead turtle and hawksbill have been turning up dead & choking with the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill. While there have been efforts to save the turtle in the wild the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill has clearly wiped out a decades worth of turtle population. Official figures state that only 222 turtles haveturnedup dead this seems to be a drop in the ocean
Dolphins
Dolphins are one of the most roaming creatures in the ocean & there are Nine species of dolphins regularly roam the Gulf of Mexico. Dolphins in the spill zone are at risk for inhaling or ingesting oil; they’re also susceptible to oil fumes, which can knock them out and cause them to drown.
