In Defence of Tony "Oil Spill" Hayward: The Real Tony Stark

Tony Hayward is the real life Tony Stark. One who is greatly accomplished & unabashedly insensitive and being self centric. For both of them the problems of their companies is the problems of the world. It is rightly so. A disaster of British Petroleum (Stark Enterprises) results in the disaster of the world’s all-too-centralized ecological & geological system. Lastly both prefer to treat the world problem all alone refuting the claims & suggestions made by the rest. The recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (BP oil spill / the BP oil disaster or the Macondo blowout) has attractted more media attention than China securing the most Golds at the Beijing Olympics. It has evn been pegged as the 9/11 of all environmental disasters. `The Gulf of Mexico oil spill has raged a battle in the sourrounding ecosystem for the survival of the fittest. More animal species have died in this oil slick in two months than the US citizen dies in two years of oily food of the fast food chain. Neither Barrack Obama nor Bobby Jindal has not put ina strong foot in the oil spill containment efforts. Relatively speaking Tony Hayward with 2000 people & 79 vessels isdoing a fine job, with the US Coast Guard & Military joining in late.

BP’s oil spill containment efforts has been gargantuan, after all they have got acres of oil floating on the sea to collect plus they have an unruly oil well 5,000 ft below the sea level gushing around 35,000 to 60,000 barrels of oil per day. The loss due to the oil spill containment measures is estimated well ove $100 million. To top it all the oil spill response equipment has failed thrice. With such huge figures on board no one is talking about the 11 dead workers aboard the rig. Sea area the size of Scotland is swathing in oil while scientists & journalists are not permitted to venture in troubled waters thus disallowing the excate nature, extent & danger level to be comprehended. The only people who truly understand the magnitude of this calamity are the BP officials & Army perssonel both of whom are media shy. With satellite images & number of vessels trailing we are to believe that the oil spill containment efforts are in full swing. Even if Tony Hayward is watching his yatch on his off-day he is evaluating & controlling the oil spill containment efforts. After all Tony is known for his leadership style in Forbes circle. One of the first suggestion offered by the US as an oil spill response was to nuke the site. Thanks to Tony Hayward who refused it at the first mention. The major oil spill response equipment that BP has used have been pioneering scientifically. An assortment of oil spill response equipment was required to bridge the gap between the well & the sea. All of these oil spill response equipment had been made but never tested in deep waters. Also they are developing new oil spill response equipment to contain the oil spill as soon as possible. The entire clean-up of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill will take 2-3 months by BP estimates with the most advanced oil spill response equipment.

The oil spill containment measures taken though failed have briged the gap a little. Even the worlds second largest oil company cannot afford to waste oil like that even if it means for only commercial needs. The problem with the oil spill containment measures undertaken in the Gulf of Mexico is unique. the problem that plagues there is that the oil well in question is oneof the deepest that is operational on the sea bed along with it, this oil well gushes oil at high pressure & being situated at a greath depth the temperature is quite low. Coupled with the fact that at such depths no human can venture due to the great under sea pressure. Depth, pressure & temperature are affecting the oil spill response equipment. To work at such harsh surroundings BP has leased & operated Remotely Operated Vehical (ROV), 100 tonne containment dome & techniques such as “Top Kill” to relatively contain the oil flw if not to block it completely.

These oil spill response equipment have gathered more criticism than end results. But it should be kept in mind that these were the only oil spill containment response that the world had to offer BP to solve its own crisis of oil dependency. Lastly Tony has fought bravely alone in the face of BP, US, media & public to do what had to be done.
