Giving a stark reminder of the mortality of our technological advancements, today as many as 160 people were feared dead after an Air India plan arriving from Dubai crashed and burst in flames. From a distance, one would have seen a mushroom cloud of flame and fury, reminding us of our own follies.
The plan overshot the runway, which according to Aviation experts, is an operation risk for “tabletop” runways. The pilot descending on the runway a little too late, resulting in the plane tipping over into the valley below. Apart from the usual banter of Indian politics, with the Indian Aviation Minister Praful Patel offering to resign while taking
moral responsibility”, this is a tragic accident on humane grounds, rather than a political empathy matchup demanding calculated public statements.
Television images show dense black smoke billowing from the Boeing 737-800 aircraft engulfed in flames, just outside the Mangalore city airport in the valley below with thick grass and trees.
Firefighters sprayed water on the plane, as rescue workers struggled to find survivors. Local villagers formed the best alliance here and acted heroically in order to search for survivors. One firefighter was seen running up a hill with an injured child in his arms.
Air India official Jitender Bhargava has stated that the plane carried 160 passengers and six crew members. There are now known to be 7 individuals who survived miraculously, which was 8 until a while ago.
“This is a major calamity,” Karnataka Home Minister V.S. Acharya told national news network CNN-IBN TV. Thank you, but we’re aware of that.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed condolences for the crash and was prompt to offer compensation for the families of the victims. Who’s thinking about money?! Nevertheless, it will be appreciated by the families.
The crash could be the deadliest in India since the November 1996 midair collision between a Saudi airliner and a Kazakh cargo plane near New Delhi that killed 349 people.
“Pre-monsoon rains over the past two days caused low visibility in the area”, is the official word by officials at the Mangalore airport.
Mangalore airport is about 19 miles (30 kilometers) outside of Mangalore city, and we can’t help but question the potential hazard such “tabletops” pose to flyers.
